DEFINITION OF SMOKER

smoker is an individual who regularly inhales smoke from burning substances, most commonly tobacco, through various methods such as cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or other devices. Smoking introduces harmful chemicals, including nicotine, into the body, leading to potential health risks, such as respiratory diseases, cardiovascular issues, and cancer.

Types of Smokers:

  1. Active Smokers:

    • These are individuals who personally consume tobacco by smoking it directly through cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or other smoking devices.
    • Subtypes:
      • Occasional Smokers (Social Smokers):
        • Individuals who smoke infrequently, often in social situations.
      • Regular Smokers:
        • Individuals who smoke on a daily basis and may have a physical dependence on nicotine.
      • Heavy Smokers:
        • Those who smoke large quantities of tobacco daily, often exceeding one or more packs of cigarettes per day.
  2. Passive Smokers (Secondhand Smokers):

    • Individuals who do not smoke themselves but are exposed to smoke from others. Secondhand smoke can also lead to serious health complications.
    • Types of Secondhand Smoke Exposure:
      • Side-stream Smoke: Smoke that comes directly from the burning end of a cigarette, cigar, or pipe.
      • Mainstream Smoke: Smoke exhaled by a smoker.
  3. Former Smokers:

    • Individuals who have smoked in the past but have successfully quit. They may still have a history of smoking-related health risks.
  4. Third-hand Smokers:

    • These individuals are exposed to tobacco toxins that persist in the environment long after the smoking activity has ceased. Residue from tobacco smoke lingers on surfaces, clothing, and in the air, potentially affecting non-smokers.
